Food Can Make You Pretty
You’re mother was right – you are what you eat! Having a diet in place full of all the required foods can lead to a healthier, brighter complexion as well as clear skin firmer texture and fewer wrinkles.
Avoid Certain Foods:
Although greasy salty and fatty foods have yet to be directly linked to causing acne as well as other
skin problems; it wouldn’t be entirely out of context to say that such foods heavy in sugars, starch and unwanted carbohydrates merely benefit our bodies and our overall health.
10 Foods That Can Work Wonders For Your Skin:
1. Salmon
Eating fish may be good for your brain, but fish is also good for your skin! (Fatty types of fish such as sardines, mackerel, fresh tuna doesn’t count). Including Fish as part of your menu (at least three times a week) can work wonders on dry or sensitive skin and eczema.
For those who are unable to enjoy seafood, -try fish oil supplements. Or if you happen to be vegetarian, try flax-seed oil, as it contains a plant-based version of the Essential Fatty Acids.
2. Green Tea
Green tea benefits the heart and is now also used as one of the ingredients in many top-of-the-line skin care creams. The reason? Green tea is full of antioxidants, called catechins, which are also useful in fighting viruses as well as slowing the aging process. Recommended amount: Try to have about 1-2 cups a day.
3. Oranges & Grapefruit
Your body can’t store all the required wrinkle-fighting vitamin C, so in order to keep your skin’s vitamin C levels high, it’s important to eat atleast one orange a day.
Vitamin C helps to keep collagen( the supportive protein fibers that stop skin from sagging) strong and resilient. (loose collagen results in fine lines and wrinkles). Since collagen starts to really deteriorate in your mid-30s, keeping citrus fruits within reach will help keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay.
4. Spinach
Contains a healthy dose of Vitamin A, -which supports skin cell turnover, and enables the process that keeps cell growth and development operating flawlessly. With a lack of Vitamin A, your skin will become dry, tough, and scaly.
5. Low fat Probiotic Yogurt
Contains friendly bacteria, pro-biotic yogurt is full of the good bacteria – Lactobacillus Acidophilus( if you want to be precise) – that helps keep your digestion track in shape and also benefits your skin by keeping it smooth with Vitamin A!
6. Berries
Instead of indulging in sweets and other empty calories, try berries! Blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries are full of antioxidants such as vitamin E and C that are really good for your skin. The vitamin C in berries is great for restoring skin, and is important for keeping your complexion smooth.
*Best of all, berries are customizable & delicious so it’s no task to include them into your diet;- use them as dessert, snack or sprinkle them on your breakfast cereal!
7. Whole Grain Foods
A healthy digestion track is very important for your complexion – after all, if your body is unable to get rid of waste properly, toxins are able to build up and show on your skin.
Wholegrain versions of foods such as bread and pasta are full of fiber that is important for your digestion (wholegrain foods also keep you feeling full for a longer time), plus iron and another skin-benefiting nutrients such as vitamin B. Replace your everyday processed ‘white’ carbs for wholegrain substitutes, such as granary bread in place of white sliced loaves as well as brown rice for long-grain rice.
8. Water
Our bodies are made up of 70% water, so it makes sense that hydrating our body will reap benefits through well moisturized and supple skin. It’s all about good bottled or filtered water in its purest form,- not sodas or energy drinks! Try to drink at least 6-8 glasses a day everyday.
9. Nuts
Nuts are full of skin-benefiting nutrients, especially vitamins A and E. Vitamin A & E are well known antioxidants as they protect our bodies and skin against pollutants as well as sun damage. Like oily fish, nuts and seeds nuts also contain good fats to keep your complexion nourished and smooth.
10. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Olive is used to soothe sunburn and other skin issues by applying it directly to the skin. Olive oil also contains good fats as well as the antioxidant vitamin E, it is also beneficial to the heart. Although at times expensive, Olive oil’s health and skin benefits far outweigh its cost! If you are able to , use it in place of your regular cooking oil, sprinkle on salads, pasta dishes and pizza.
Remember: You just may be what you eat and food can go a long way in benefiting your skin!
